The Giant Grasshopper Of Lombard Street

Thought I’d have a go at Six Word Saturday

Lombard Street was known for its signs as well as its financial institutions. There were 138 signs hanging in the street in 1800. This is the sign of Merchant and Financier Thomas Gresham and appears on his coat of arms.

    1. A Gresham family legend says that Thomas’s ancestor Roger de Gresham was abandoned as an infant in the marshlands of his Norfolk homeland. A woman out foraging was attracted by the sound of a chirruping grasshopper and on investigation found the abandoned infant. Generations later the Greshams had become wealthy merchants and incorporated the insect into their coat of arms.
